A Lancet Series on geopolitical tools in foreign policy and global health.
At the Stanford Geopolitical Human Impact Research Lab, three manuscripts examining geopolitical tools — foreign aid, armed conflict, sanctions, and maritime blockades — will be developed for publication as a series in The Lancet, reaching tens of millions of readers worldwide.
A proven track record of shifting policymaker perspectives.
Lancet Series have a proven track record of shifting policymaker perspectives and driving meaningful change for the world’s most vulnerable populations. Publishing in The Lancet will help the Lab influence policy at the highest levels — reaching tens of millions of readers worldwide, from health ministries to multilateral leadership.
Modeling, open data, and policy reach.
Three thematic manuscripts.
Framing the Crisis and Conceptualising Foreign Engagement in Global Health
Paper 1 sets the conceptual foundation for the Series. It defines foreign engagement in global health, situates the present crisis, and advances a framework for identifying and measuring how cooperative and coercive instruments affect health outcomes.
The Global Health Impact of Changing Geopolitical Landscapes and Alternative Foreign Engagement Strategies: A Complex Systems Modelling Study in LMICs to 2040
Paper 2 uses complex systems modeling, building on models previously developed by ISGlobal, to project undernutrition, morbidity, and mortality in low- and middle-income countries through 2040 under alternative and complex modeling of various foreign engagement pathways.
Pathways to Protect Global Health in an Era of Geopolitical Crisis: Future Directions
Paper 3 draws on the first two papers to consider how foreign engagement might be reshaped, to identify pathways toward greater self-reliance and a more equitable international architecture, and to set out policy recommendations for protecting global health.
